CAUSES OF MORAL DECADENCE AMONG YOUTHS IDENTIFIED

The gradual disappearance of African traditional values and culture have been identified  as  one of the major causes of social vices now prevalent among  youths in Nigeria.

To reverse the trend, parents and guardians have a role to nurture their young ones with good morals and values from infancy.

Yoruba folk writer and poet, Adejoke Somoye, made this assertion while addressing participants at the on-going Ogun 2017 Summer Camp at Akin Ogunpola Model College, Akinale in Ewekoro Local Government Area.

She noted that infiltration of foreign culture and advent of social media are having negative effects on the young ones, urging parents, whom she described as first teachers to instil moral values on them.

Somoye, also known as ‘’Ewa Ede’’, regretted that many children found it difficult to express themselves in their mother’s tongue and could not write in Yoruba.

‘’Most parents, particularly of those of Yoruba extraction, are fond of addressing their children in English language at the expense of Yoruba. This they do to the extent that such children usually find it difficult to express simple words in their local dialect.’’

Dressed in traditional Buba and Iro with head gear, Ewa Ede educated the children on greetings, traditional dresses, folks and songs in Yoruba language among others.
