The Nigerian military has enhanced surveillance in Lagos, in particular around critical infrastructures. The chief of army staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, spoke about the issue over the weekend as he addressed the troops of the ninth brigade urging them to cooperate with security bodies.
Some allege that after the army offensive in the northeast, many Boko Haram insurgents fled to Lagos and other southern states, which forced the military and relevant security agencies to take protective measures. One of the sources disclosed that all the vehicles entering the Apapa and Tin Can ports are being thoroughly searched.
“IEDs [improvised explosive devices] could be hidden in anything or any car, so there is nothing wrong with security being beefed up. People should consider the catastrophe should any bomb explodes around the ports. “The damage that would be done to lives and properties cannot be innumerate. Aside that, foreign ships will not want to berth in Lagos again, resulting to serious economic loss.
“It is in the interest of all that a combined team of military and civil security agents are working tirelessly to avoid any unpleasant surprise in Lagos.” “We are aware the terrorists have infiltrated and that is why we are acting ahead of them, beefing up intelligence and clearing all areas that they could hide without raising suspicion.” It should be recalled that on October 11 there was a bomb scare in Oworonshoki area of Lagos state. It was further learnt that the explosion had been caused by gas cylinder.
