Iya Osogbo: Life and Times of Grace Owoola Oyi-Adejobi

Book Review
Title: Iya Osogbo Life and Times of Grace Owoola Oyi-Adejobi
Pages: 235
Price: Not stated
Author: Vincent Akindele
Reviewer:
Publisher: Hinds’ Fit Communication Limited, Ibadan
Though it appears like any biography in its structure and presentation, it is unequivocally an uncommon work of art with unique features and touches. It is unique in quite a number of ways: It is carefully and consciously written to satisfy both the English and Yoruba speaking fans of the subject. The Yoruba texts are presented in a comprehensible way with the use of the Yoruba diacritic, that is, the Yoruba tone marks and sub-dots. Another unique feature is the question and answer part of the book which is translated to Yoruba and tucked in the appendix.
There are seventeen chapters all together in presenting life and times of the legendary actress, Mama Grace Owoola Oyin-Adejobi who is also known as Iya Osogbo with the last chapter as tribute to the subject as contributed by her children, colleagues and contemporaries.  Chapter one is an exposition on the Yoruba belief and culture of child christening which is titled, ‘What a name!’ The author treats the concept of grace being her first name and the middle name, Owoola as wielding great influence on her life. He notes that it is by God’s grace that she has triumphed over several trials; to accommodate and tolerate insults and attacks from her co-wives as a sacrifice for the success and happiness of her husband and family. According to the author it takes God’s grace that she has lived long to be 93 years of age in a country where life expectancy is 55 years; and her middle name, Ọwọọla, gives the aura that attracts fortune, fame, and favour her eventful and fruitful life.
In chapter two, the author leads readers to the birth and ancestry of Mama Oyin-Adejobi who was born on August 23, 1930 to the family of Pa John Okebiyi and Mrs. Deborah Ọlabisi Okebiyi at Isalẹ Ọṣun of a royal lineage of Òṣogbo as the third of her father’s children and the second of her mother’s five children. Her father was an educated and a building contractor who had three wives with her mother as the second.
Chapter three gives the account of the excitement of the family when she started primary education at All Saints’ Anglican Primary School, Balogun Agoro, Ile-Abodua, Oluọde, Òṣogbo, Ọṣun State in 1941 after she scaled through the hurdle of stretching her right hand over the head to touch the left ear at a time when qualification for admission into primary school was by stature, not age.  Sadly, in 1948, she was expelled for non-payment of school fees as her mother stopped paying her school fees after she was negatively influenced by her friends and used the money her mother sent for school fees to buy clothes. That was the mistake that led to the termination of her educational pursuits.
Chapter four captures the trying times of Mama after she dropped out of school while working to make ends meet and how she chose to train as a skilled professional by enrolling as an apprentice at Mrs. Clegg’s fashion/cloth making outfit in Òṣogbo to become a seamstress. Chapter five details the deal of the life partnership between Pa Oyin Adejobi and Mama. The author considers the acceptance of the marriage proposal of Prince Adéjọbí by Mama as answering a divine call to partner with the young man to fulfill God’s purpose in his chosen career and entire life out of genuine love which is equally viewed as an act of showing kindness and compassion to a specially ‘able person’. In chapter six, Mama Oyin-Adéjọbí is presented as a virtuous woman who without noticeable frictions combined three roles together as a wife, mother and an actress.
Chapter seven is devoted to the life and times of her husband, Oyin Adejobi who Mama hysterically and hilariously refers to as ‘Baba wa’- our father and possessively claimed, ‘ọkọ mi’ – my husband , even though she had other four co-wives. Chapter eight shows the reason Mama is known and addressed as Ìyá Òṣogbo while chapter nine chronicles her exploits in the acting career. Chapter ten further reveals that the making of Ìyá Òṣogbo was divinely facilitated by Oyin Adéjọbí Theatre Company which was founded by her darling husband. Chapter eleven discusses some plays which were produced and performed by the Oyin Adéjọbí Theatre Company.
Chapter twelve showcases the songs which the the Oyin Adéjọbí Theatre Company appropriately used to spice up its plays. Chapter thirteen lists the awards Mama received from different organisations in recognition of her uniqueness, dexterity and prodigy in acting. Chapter fourteen portrays Mama as a life guided by God’s law while on a related note, chapter fifteen reports that at her ripe age Mama now yearns for heaven’s attention as she has stopped starring in secular plays, video and films, rather, she has opted to be “acting for God” in order to gain heaven’s attention as she has had enough of the world’s attention and recognition. Chapter 16 aptly titled, ‘Face-to-face with Ìyá Òṣogbo, presents excerpts of the interview session to readers in order that they may have a one-on-one interaction with Mama and chapter 17 contains tribute on her as contributed by her children.
It is symbolically significant that the Foreword to the book was written by a female fan of Iya Osogbo, Dr.  Ruth Ọmọtọla Ọnasanya, a lecturer at Federal College of Agriculture, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. She states, “I watched some of the Oyin-Adéjọbí’s TV drama series while growing up. I remember Mama's roles in Kóòtù Aṣípa, Orogún Adédigba, Oyin Mọmọ, Ilé Ìwòsàn and I loved to listen to the group's songs with baba's unique baritone voice.” Her assertion becomes a compelling attestation as she adds, “ interestingly, some of the songs are carefully packaged in this book.”
The book, no doubt, is a good biography written in simple and lucid language.  The author’s versatility and multifarious background as a media practitioner and scholar, a playwright, a poet, a story-teller and a journalist reflect all through the pages. It contains the three major literary genres:  Prose , drama and poetry.  It is competently crafted in an engaging prose; the poet in the author is shown in the generous use of praise poetry (oriki) in the stories of the Oyin Adejobi family and the ancient city of Osogbo; some of the plays and songs of the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Party are skillfully put in dialogues making it pleasantly chatty and conversational. The interview session with Iya Osogbo enables readers see her speak, giving an interactive effect. The use of biblical allusion, proverbs and idioms embellishes the book.
However, the book is not without its peculiar short-comings which should be corrected in the second edition. It is not indexed and some Yoruba letters are left without the diacritic: Yoruba tone marks and sub-dots.
That aside, the book is a diligently written account of life and times of a legendary actress, Mama Grace Owoola alias Iya Osogbo and her husband, the late Oyin Adejobi. It is a compulsory read for all lovers of good books. Students, researchers, lecturers, theatre practitioners and song wtriters will find the book useful as a veritable material for scholarship and practice.

Assault On NTA Abeokuta Journalists: Ogun NUJ Demand Thorough Investigation, Appropriate Sanction

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, has given the Management of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu a 24-hour ultimatum to tender an unreserved apology to the two journalists assaulted on the street of Sagamu while carrying out their official duties.

The two journalists from the Nigeria Television Authority, NTA Abeokuta - Comrades Yemi Dalemo (Assistant Manager News) and Gbenga Egbepeju (Cameraman) were beaten while doing a follow up story on the missing body of a yet to be identified lady whose family came to take for burial only for them to discover that she was no longer in the mortuary.

At a meeting held at the State secretariat, Iwe Irohin Press Centre, Oke-Ilewo Abeokuta today, the Union wonders what could have been responsible for such inhuman action if the management of the institution, as earlier claimed, has nothing hidden in the event of the missing corpse at the hospital.

The meeting, therefore expresses no doubt that the wicked act is precipitated on the need to possibly create a climate of fear in sourcing for information and eventually impending the unravelling of truth about the trending story. The obvious reason their cameras and other equipments were seized.

In that regards, the  Union emphatically demands

1. That a meeting between the management of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Ministry of Health Commissioner and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council be possible under 48 Hours.

2. That the five security officers who assaulted the two journalists be immediately produced and subsequently handed over to the police for thorough investigation and appropriately sanctions in accordance with the Laws of the land.

3. That an unreserved apology letter be issued to the NUJ and the two journalists assaulted, assuring that such occurrence will not repeat itself.

4. That hospital bills of the two journalists assaulted be refunded while NTA Camera and other equipments seized by the management of OOUTH and left in the custody of the Divisional Police Officer in the area be released with immediate alacrity while damaged ones are replaced.

The Union realises that this impunity, if left unabated, emboldens the perpetrators to commit more crime not minding its chilling effect on the society, including journalists themselves. On that premise, the meeting seeks for justice systems that vigorously investigate all threats of violence against journalists and send a powerful message to the society that journalists are not their enemies and should oppose attacks against them and against the right to freedom of expression for all.

Aigoro stated this during an official opening of a day training for the newly promoted Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) officers, at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, noting that the initiative of the agency would enable it to record a hitch-free succession plan across all strata of its operatives.

The Head of Service said there is no gainsaying that effective traffic management requires skilled, disciplined, and well-trained personnel to take up higher responsibility, commending the officers for their efficient service delivery in the State’s road corridors.

Earlier in his keynote address, the Commissioner for Transportation, Engr. Gbenga  Dairo enjoined the Corps to step up efforts towards expanding its operation to other means of transportation such as Rail, Air, and Water, which are embedded in the State’s Transport Master plan.

He said the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration’s resolve for TRACE is to make it a model alongside other similar institutions in developed countries, affirming that the agency has been playing an active role in the smooth running of the Pilot Bus Mass Transit launched recently, which could be seen as an example of the expanding role of TRACE.

Dairo, who doubles as the Chief Host and one of the resource persons, said officers should manage and control accidents, crashes, emergencies, and fire outbreaks, as well as ensure the safety of road users, emphasised the need for officers to have basic traffic management knowledge and skills for effective feedback, whilst having expertise at traffic control.

Ogunyemi said the training aimed at encouraging the officers and enhancing their capacity and capability for effective service delivery, as they advance in rank and structure to carry out their tasks professionally, noting that the move would help to improve the agencies' public image status.

He lauded the effort of Prince Dapo Abiodun, for facilitating the 2018, 2019, and 2020 promotion exercises, which had inspired the workforce to be more productive, charging the officers to reciprocate the government’s gesture.

In his remark, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Strategy, Alhaji Waheed Adesina said information dissemination is germane in any government agency, promising that the  Ministry would continue to publicise activities of the government, particularly on traffic management, while his counterpart in the Bureau of Establishments and Training, Mrs. Lydia Fajounbo, emphasised the need for MDAs to include training in their annual budget.
