In a Significant move towards addressing the growing public health crisis of hypertension and diabetes in Nigeria, the Nigeria Health Commissioner's Forum has launched a project tagged "Project 10 Million: Know Your Number, Control Your Number".
Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Dr. Coker explained that Non-communicable Diseases such as hypertension and diabetes are significant health challenges in Nigeria that contribute to approximately 27% of all annual deaths, stressing that the risk of dying from these conditions between the ages of 30 and 70 is estimated at 17%, hence, the urgent need for comprehensive intervention.
According to the Commissioner, the project is not only about screening, but to save lives through preventative care.
"In Ogun State, we won't stop at screening a significant number of residents, but we'll provide immediate counselling and referrals for individuals with sub-optimal results and most importantly, link newly detected cases to treatment facilities for ongoing care".
The Commissioner stated that Ogun State is extending the initiative to all 236 wards across the 20 Local Government Areas, adding that screening would be accessible at all Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Health Facilities as well as Churches, Mosques, Parks and Markets throughout the State.
