IF YOU POLLUTE FOR OGUN, YOU GO PAY OOO, SAYS OGUN GOVERNMENT

In furtherance of its resolve to protect human health and preserve the environment, the Ogun State Government has said it would soon commence implementation of ‘’Polluters Pay’’ Principle across the State.
The Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye made this known while receiving members of Igbogila Descendants Association who were on a courtesy visit to his office in Abeokuta.
Oyeleye said that Government would soon begin to implement ‘’Polluters Pay’’ Principle across the State, describing it as a viable means of checking pollution of the environment on human health.
He described the principle as a globally accepted practice which stresses that “those who produce pollution should bear the cost of managing it”, to prevent damage to human health or the environment.
‘’The Polluters Pay Principle is something we are about to implement in Ogun State. What this simply means is that if you pollute the environment, you have to pay. This would serve as deterrent to people who habitually pollute the environment as our administration remains resolute in ensuring the environment is clean and sane’’, he said.
The Commissioner added that the State Government would partner with the private sector on waste management in 2016, imploring the people of the State to support Government’s mission to maintain clean environment by paying for the service of managing their waste.
The Chairman of the Igbogila Descendants Association, Alhaji Fatai Opebiyi described the responsibility of waste management as enormous, adding that the Ministry of Environment under the leadership of Mr. Oyeleye had performed well and showed promise of performing better.
Opebiyi who was a former Permanent Secretary in the State, charged Government to enlighten the people of the State on need to pay a token for the refuse they generate, saying this would ensure efficient and productive waste management.
