Ipokia LG Poll: Only LG, Ward leaders can decide loyal, popular candidates, APC Aspirants appeal to Gov. Abiodun

Following the recent politics going on at Ipokia Local Government concerning the selection of loyal and popular candidates who will fly the flag of the All Progressives Congress in the upcoming local government polls, some aspirants have pleaded with Governor Dapo Abiodun to allow ward and local government party leaders to decide.

From interaction of Ipokia UPDATE media with majority of the aspirants, it was gathered that majority of the leaders deciding their fate are not even APC leaders from inception but those who just decamped into the party following the magnanimity of the Governor to bring all together.

The aspirants while commending the all inclusiveness initiative of the Governor which has turned Ogun State to a one party State, they pleaded with the Governor not to allow these leaders to decide their fate, but ward and local government party leaders that know candidates who can deliver, who have track records and have given back to the development of Ipokia local government.

Some of them also expressed the fear that if the ruling party APC does not get its selection right at the local government, it can give room for opposition as the local government is known to have a strong opposition base.

The cry of these grassroots politicians who are aspiring to make a change and also contribute their quota is that the leaders should not just anoint a candidate over others asking that the Governor, in his magnanimity nature grant at least indirect primaries for the true, loyal and popular candidates to emerge.

It would be recalled that the party had earlier made its stand known that Consensus would be used but where consensus does not work, either direct or indirect primaries would suffice.

Some Aspirants are of the opinion that consensus can perfectly work when leaders and other aspirants agree to a candidate not just the leaders bringing up means of disqualifying qualified candidates to favour their anointed candidate.

“Your Excellency, we the aspirants from Ipokia Local Government celebrate you on your 61st birthday anniversary as well as the celebration of your second year in office. Your laudable developmental strides, which cut across all sectors of the State's economy are monumental and gradually returning the State to its pride of place amongst the Comity of States”, they expressed.

$350m World Bank loan’ll boost Ogun’s 50-yr master plan – Amosun

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, on Wednesday, disclosed that the next administration in the state will access the $350 million World Bank loan for the development of the state, adding the loan will go a long to impact positively on the 50 year master plan developed by his administration for the state.

The governor gave this disclosure during his ward-to-ward tour of Obafemi-Owode local government as part of his Ogun Central senatorial campaign.

He explained that the loan is like a grant from the World Bank because of its 1% interest rate and five year moratorium, noting  his administration had finished the paper work and met all requirements for the release of the fund.

Amosun added that beyond the infrastructural development, his government has developed a 50 year sustainable development plan for the state, which according to him,  covered education, infrastructure and other sectors.

He further disclosed that the master plan catered for the construction of a major ring road that will cut across Kobape, Idi-Aba, Odeda, amongst others, all in Ogun Central, maintaining “there can’t be any development without infrastructure”.

“Before we came in, there was Ogun state master plan but that one which covered about 30 years ended and what we did was to invite some development partners including World Bank, GIZ and we did what we called sustainable development plan. First for 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, 40 years and stopped at 50 years.

“We have envisioned where we want Ogun State to be in the immediate, short term, medium term and long term, and that is why the World Bank is collaborating with us. It was one of the things World Bank requested we have and that is what we did.

“That is why they approved the grant they want to give to us, I won’t call it loan because if you imagine 1% for 25 years with five years moratorium, that can’t be loan, that will only qualify for a grant.

“And to the glory of God, they are giving us $350 million, I have done the work and the next government will begin to reap. In education, we know where we want to be, in health and other facets including infrastructure and that is why we are running around to ensure our airport is in place.

“If we are the industrial hub of Nigeria, that comes with a lot of challenges. Our manufacturers, they want to stay in Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ota, etc, they don’t want to be running to Lagos to do their businesses. We know what to do, but there can’t be development without infrastructure,” The governor stated.

While calling on Ogun indigenes to embrace continuity of his administration in the forthcoming elections, Amosun said, “it is clear that no governor can finish everything and that is why we should not allow anybody to come and dictate for us in Ogun”.

He further enjoined the people to take their destinies in their hands and vote for the candidate that understands the blue print and will continue from where he will stop.

Police bullet crippled me, dashed my hope of fathering a child because of N20 - Petitioner recount experience on Wheel Chair

Mr. Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, a 45 year old petitioner who appeared before the Ogun State Judicial Panel of Investigation on Police Brutality, Human Rights Violations and Extra Judicial Killings on Monday has recounted how he met the disaster of his life which crippled and dashed his hope of naturally impregnating a lady.

According to the petitioner, "I was travelling to Ibadan on the 18th August, 2010 in a public transport bus at about 7pm. Policemen at the checkpoint between Fidiwo and Alapako area of Ogun State on the Lagos - Ibadan Express stopped our bus, collected N100 from the driver and asked him to park properly for his N80 change.

After parking, the driver got down for his change. While we waited, a police officer at the other side of the road just fired at our bus, the bullet hit me at the neck and turned down to lodge into my spinal cord. When the police officers realised the devastating effect of their action, they fled the scene with their vehicle.

I became unconscious and was rushed to University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan by the driver and other passengers in the bus where I was admitted for surgery and the bullet was extracted from my spinal cord after four days".

The petitioner added that he had written severally to different authorities concerned and even to Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, after which two police officers were sent to investigate the matter but ever since then, over 10 years ago, nothing was done.

Mr. Fagbemi revealed that being the breadwinner, it had been so difficult because he had spent millions of naira on medical care, flown to India for treatment, sold properties and belongings on the matter and above all, have been confined on wheel chair due to the spinal cord injury.

The petitioner who disclosed that he was preparing to get married when this unfortunate incident happened said he has no child yet and have been told medically that it would only take in vitro fertilization method for him to father a child now.

The Panel Chairman, Justice Solomon Olugbemi while reacting disclosed that a letter would be written to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police to release Officers in Charge of Legal and X-Squad departments to appear before the Panel with all necessary documents to give evidence. The petition was thereafter adjourned to April 1, 2021 for further hearing.

Puzzle: Already Demoted Police Sergeant Promoted Inspector Two Years After

The Ogun State Judicial Panel of Investigation on Police Brutality, Human Rights Violations and Extra Judicial Killings has learnt that a Police Sergeant, Gbenga Olajide who was demoted to the rank of Corporal following a misconduct was promoted an Inspector of Police two years after.

The Nigeria Police Force in year 2017 through the office of the Provost at the Ogun State Command in care of 16PMF released a signal with CH6450/OGS/PROV/VOL 21/312 DTO 231549/02/2017 demobbing and reducing Sergeant Olajide to the rank of a Corporal following his orderly room trial on a case of attempted murder. Olajide was alleged to have stabbed one Mr. Oluwasola Oladunjoye on the side of his neck with no justification.

Having been demoted, the same officer was transferred to Ondo State Command three months after, where he was alleged to have reported as a Sergeant and not a Corporal. Two years after, Olajide got promoted to the rank of Inspector of Police.

The Panel found out about the suspicious promotion of Olajide upon enquiries about his present posting and rank after the Panel had heard evidence of the petitioner, Mr. Oluwasola Oladunjoye, during its sitting at Magistrate Court 1, Isabo, Abeokuta.

Narrating his experience with Officer Olajide, Mr. Oladunjoye, a Weight Lifter who came fourth in the 69kg category while representing Nigeria in India in the year 2008 said, "I went to a bank in Abeokuta, to withdraw money in preparation for my trip to Cuba to participate in the Weight Lifting Festival of 2017.

There were cars and motorcycles packed in front of the bank and for me to pass, I jumped over a motorcycle and a police officer accosted me asking if I knew the implication of my action? While still speaking with me, another officer named Gbenga Olajide slapped me from the back and later stabbed me on the side of the neck".

The petitioner who added that the incident prevented him from attending the competition at Cuba where he could have won medals worth millions of naira for himself as well as made the nation proud is seeking justice by way of prosecution against officer Gbenga Olajide who attempted to take his life, while also requesting for appropriate compensation for his medical bills, already purchased flight ticket to Cuba amongst other losses.

The Panel Chairman, Justice Solomon Olugbemi, while reacting said, "the officer has been invited to come and give his own side of the story before we will conclude our own investigation".

HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES: OGUN JUDICIAL PANEL ENJOINS RESIDENTS TO SEEK LEGAL REDRESS

Residents of Ogun State have been enjoined to always take full advantage of all the legal means available for justice delivery whenever they feel cheated or believe that their human rights have been abused or violated.

The Chairman, Ogun Judicial Panel of Investigation, Justice Solomon Olugbemi gave the advise on Wednesday at the Magistrate Court 1, Isabo, Abeokuta while responding to a petitioner, Mr. Odupitan Daniel who brought a complaint against police officers at Adigbe division for allegedly charging him to Court without proper investigation.

According to the Chairman, "as a Panel, we are here to investigate complaints of victims on Police Brutality. We cannot say that police should not do their official duties, neither can we go against the law that empowered them to charge suspects to Court".

Justice Olugbemi used the avenue to reaffirm that the purpose for setting up the Panel was to receive and investigate complaints of victims on Police Brutality, Human Rights Violations and Extra Judicial killings by security operatives within the State adding that appropriate recommendations would be made to government at the end of the sittings.

Drama at Ogun Judicial Panel as Police Sergeant threatens Panel member

A mild drama ensued at the Ogun State Judicial Panel of Investigation sitting at the Magistrate Court 1, Isabo, Abeokuta, when a police officer, Sergeant Adeleke Olalekan who accompanied CSP Gbenga Megbope, a respondent in a case, was allegedly caught committing contempt against Panel members right from his seat, while the Panel cross examines his supposed boss during the sitting.

The sergeant who was allegedly seen to be pointing finger and speaking disrespectfully in a manner suggestive of threat at panel members and could not explain why, was called up and booked for appropriate punishment as stipulated under the Commission of Inquiry law.

Reeling out the law against the offender, the Panel Chairman, Justice Solomon Olugbemi, said "any act of disrespect, insult or threat to the Commissioners or any Panel members while sitting in Commission or any act of disrespect, insult or threat to a Commissioner or Panel members at any other time or place on account of his proceedings in his capacity as a Commissioner or Panel member shall be deemed to be an act of contempt within the meaning of this law under Section 16 of the same law".

Reading further, the Chairman revealed that, "any person who commits an act of contempt, whether the act is or is not committed in the presence of the Commissioners sitting in Commission, such person or persons shall be liable to summary conviction before a court of competent jurisdiction to be convicted and punished according to the tenet stipulated in the law”.

Justice Olugbemi noted that the Police Sergeant ought to be recommended for trial at the Magistrate court, however, the Panel member who was disrespected, pleaded that the alleged offender be pardoned, having apologized, prostrated and pleaded for mercy and showing remorse, the Panel have therefore refrained from recommending him for trial.

The Panel boss used the avenue to warn, saying, “the panel would no longer tolerate any act of disrespect to it or any of its members as the law would be allowed to take its course in any such further act”.

Speaking with journalists after the sitting, a former Commissioner of Police and the present Commandant of Amotekun Security Outfit in Ogun State, Mr. David Ajibola Akinremi who witnessed the proceedings commended the Panel for doing thorough job at investigating petitions brought before it.

The Amotekun boss added that, "the setting up of the Judicial Panel was a welcome development as the wrongs of the past can be seen and solution proffered towards ensuring a better working relationship between the police and the members of the public for a better policing and a safer society".

Speaking with journalists, the Chairman, Justice Solomon Olugbemi who led other panel members said the need for on site assessment of the facility for proper investigation became imperative so as to ascertain and determine the veracity of claims of both petitioners and respondents.

"During the course of giving evidence, several witnesses that came before the Panel mentioned the former office of the defunct Special Anti Robbery Squad, Magbon now in use by the new outfit SWAT and Oba Correctional Centre, Abeokuta amongst others" the panel chairman stated.

According to him, "the panel visited the Locus in quo somewhere in Alagada area of Oba in relation to an alleged extra judicial killing by a Mobile Police Officer, Sergeant Tunji Ademuyegun attached to the New Abeokuta Correctional Service, Oba facility sometimes in 2019 to inspect the security outposts of the Army, Mobile Police and Correctional Guards to gather useful information on how the run away police sergeant could have successfully escaped.

During the visit, two eye witnesses Alhaji Sulaimon Salisu and Mr. Oluwafemiwa Kehinde Owosa at the scene where Sergeant Ademuyegun was alleged to have shot late Biola Adeyanju spoke with the Panel saying the officer shot sporadically after being drunk and the bullet eventually hit the deceased.

The Chairman reiterated the commitment of the panel to holistic fact findings and thorough investigation into all petitions before the panel to deliver justice to all without fear or favor and to make appropriate recommendations to government.
