OGUN REINFORCES COMMITMENT TO EMPOWERING VULNERABLE GROUPS

The Ogun State government has reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to empowering vulnerable communities and promoting inclusive growth.

The Hon. Commissioner for Finance, and Chief Economic Adviser, Mr. Dapo Okubadejo made this known during a meeting with the World Bank team led by Ms. Pamela Tuiyott and other stakeholders, at the Ministry of Finance Conference room, Oke- Mosan, Abeokuta. He highlighted the collaborative strides made in addressing social challenges, particularly those affecting the most vulnerable citizens.
Okubadejo, spoke on the state's ongoing efforts in supporting its vulnerable populations, adding that the role of initiatives such as the Nigeria for Women and Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP), which are funded by the World Bank have had direct impact on improving the lives of vulnerable groups, with a focus on alleviating poverty and combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

"Ogun State has made significant strides through carefully designed social safety net programmes. These programmes are helpful in empowering and protecting those most in need, particularly women and marginalised groups.

These reforms are facilitating access to credit and grants for small businesses and vulnerable individuals, contributing to economic independence and breaking the cycles of poverty" he noted.

According to him, “Ogun State has placed a strong focus on women and marginalized groups, particularly through the expansion of its Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) which are now integrated into Women Development Centres, with the aim of providing training for women and youth in high-demand trades. These initiatives are not only aimed at empowering women economically, but also to reshape societal norms and creating safe spaces for them to thrive”.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Adijat Adeleye, called for continued collaboration among stakeholders, to ensure the state's development goals translate into meaningful outcomes for its citizens.

She emphasised that the State is not only growing economically, but also dedicated to making sure that the growth benefits its most vulnerable populations.

In his remark, the Commissioner for budget and planning, Mr. Olaolu Olabimtan, noted that the gender advocacy project resonates well with the state goals, as it fosters inclusion, diversity and equity.

In the same vein, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Focal Coordinator for West Africa, Ms. Pamela Tuiyott from the World Bank, praised Ogun State's commitment to the Sexual Assault Recovery Centres (SARC). She stressed the importance of building the capacity of SARC officers and sharing lessons from global best practices in GBV service provision.

She expressed confidence that continued engagement would lead to greater impact, as well as ensuring quality services for women and other beneficiaries in Ogun State.

Project 10 Million: Ogun takes the lead in Hypertension, Diabetes free screening exercise


... as Abiodun, deputy, 75,548 others get screened

Following the official launch of the medical outreach tagged "Project 10 Million: Know Your Number, Control Your Number", where 10 Million Nigerians are expected to be freely screened for Hypertension and Diabetes, the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako - Oyedele alongside 75,548 others have undergone the free screening exercise.

According to the data received for Ogun State from the National Collation Centre's backend, the Commissioner for Health in the State, Dr. Tomi Coker disclosed that, "close to 80,000 residents have been screened putting Ogun State in first position among the comity of States in the country undergoing the screening exercise".

Speaking with newsmen, Dr. Coker disclosed that, "with the way Ogun State is going with this exercise, we would hit our targets because we have a special focus to reach the underserved communities to ensure that vulnerable populations have equitable access to essential care".

The Commissioner added that the lead experienced by Ogun State is a true reflection of the commitment of the Prince Dapo Abiodun led government to the provision of effective and efficient health care services for the citizenry disclosing that the gateway state has always been in the forefront of things that will positively be of great benefits to the people.

While commending the medical team across the State's Health Sector for their zeal and commitment to the project, the Commissioner enjoined residents to troop out in their numbers to any primary, secondary or tertiary healthcare facilities around them while assuring that the team would also be visiting churches, mosques, parks and market places throughout the state.

"The Project is endorsed by the Nigeria Governors Forum and supported by Health Commissioners from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the exercise will run until Sunday, November 3rd, 2024", Dr. Coker said.

The Commissioner added that Hypertension and Diabetes are two non communicable diseases that poses significant health challenges in Nigeria contributing approximately 27% of all annual deaths hence the urgent need for the intervention while she revealed that detected cases so far are being linked to government health facilities for ongoing care.

Reacting, the Chairperson, Nigeria Labour Congress, Women Wing, Ogun State, Comrade Omolara Olaiya after undergoing the screening exercise gave kudos to the present administration in the State for taking the health need of its people seriously calling on the people of the State to come out enmasse to get screened as the exercise is totally free.

In their separate reactions, Mr. Osipitan Oluwafemi Emmanuel from Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Mr. Seyon Yanudetho from Ipokia Local Government and Mrs. Ariyibi Bukola Temitope from Abeokuta South Local Government areas of the state, all commended the initiative saying the exercise was seamless, free of charge and timely.
